How To Write A Good Essay On Any Topic

Students are often advised to pick essay topics that correspond with their interests, but it can happen that you’ve been given an essay that’s not exactly your cup of tea; or perhaps you’ve received a list of topics and none of them really get you enthusiastic.

Knowing how to write a good essay despite the topic will be a skill you’ll appreciate when you come into a situation like this. Below are some tips that will guide you with your next essay assignment; no matter what it may be.

Questions and keywords

Once you get started on your essay, it seems to flow a lot easier. But it’s the getting started that’s often the hardest part. A great way to get this obstacle out of the way is to ask yourself the relevant questions pertaining to the topic. Write down pertinent questions and keywords, no matter how insignificant they may seem at first. Once you have this skeletal structure, your essay will start to form nicely.

A rough draft

Now write a rough draft of your essay. This is a lot of fun actually because the point is to not care if it’s good or bad. Just write! Once you’re done, you’ll be surprised how much of what you wrote can actually be used in your final work.

Some light reading

Leave your essay sitting on your desk and let your mind marinade in some casual research on the topic. Try not to make it too much like a homework project. Just browse the internet, relax at the library, and get a few other perspectives on the topic.

Structure

Now go back to your draft and write your essay with all the knowledge you’ve acquired, but make sure it still holds to the tone of your original draft so that your signature is still visible. Be sure to divide your essay into an introduction, three paragraphs of content and then a conclusion.

Read and revise

Once you’ve done this, go back and read the essay a few hours later. Revise any mistakes and make changes wherever necessary. Then take another break or go to sleep. Once you’re mind has relaxed about an essay that’s finished and ready to hand in, go back and read it again. Make sure it’s exactly what your professor will want and that it represents you to the fullest.
